Hellenic Paganism: How to Create Good Fortune With a Kathiskos

In Hellenic Paganism, the creation of a sacred kathiskos on Noumenia is a fairly common practice.

What Is A Kathiskos?

A kathiskos is a special two-handled jar was filled with water, olive oil and various foods from the home pantry, decorated with white wool and yellow thread.

This was then dedicated to Zeus Ktesios to protect and grow their household prosperity.

For many ancient Greeks the household prosperity was inextricably linked to the food they consumed.

This practice is based upon the following quote:

It is necessary to make the symbol of Zeus Ktesios.

We take a new Kadiskos with two ears (handles) through which we thread white wool and yellow thread which we take over the right shoulder so that it hangs in front. We put anything we find and ambrosia in it.

Ambrosia is pure water and oil and all-fruit. This we put inside.

How To Make A Kathiskos

The ancient Greeks used a lunisolar calendar so the kathiskos was freshly created at the beginning of the month on the new moon called the Noumenia.

It’s then emptied at the end of the month on the dark moon called the Deipnon.

You can adapt this for modern life by creating the kathiskos at the beginning of each new month and disposing of it at the end of every month.

Although if you want to maintain the new moon and dark moon aspects of the ritual, then go for it!

Below you’ll find a basic guide to creating your own kathiskos.

Tools

A small airtight glass jar, fresh water, olive oil, grains, honey, herbs and ribbons to decorate if desired.

Method

  1. Wash your hands and the jar you wish to use.

  2. Add any dry grains and herbs.

  3. Pour a small amount of olive oil and honey into your jar.

  4. Fill the jar with fresh water to the top and seal the lid tightly, as air getting into the jar will cause the contents to spoil.

  5. Decorate the jar with white and yellow ribbon if desired.

  6. Place your kathiskos inside a cupboard where you store food and say a prayer to Zeus Ktesios. For example:

Hear me! Zeus Ktesios, protector of the home, giver of good, granter of wealth. I ask for your blessings upon this household and all who dwell within it. May our prosperity grow. In praise and in offering, this kathiskos is dedicated to you.

  7. Empty and clean the jar at the end of the month and replace it at the beginning of the next month.
